When asked to name the very nicest
area of Visalia, few would argue against
the neighborhood known as Old Green
Acres. The lots are huge, the homes
are completely unique, and the mature
foliage is not only beautiful, but reduces
the temperature greatly during the hot
valley summer. LeBon and Mary Jane Abercrombie
own one of the nicest of the nice. As
you approach, notice that the fence,
a street noise have been beautifully
softened by a privacy screen, along
with Camellias, Gardenias and Holly
Berry bushes. This 1+ acre lot was originally
part of Hyde Ranch. Mr. and Mrs. James
Abercrombie, the parents of LeBon, built
one of the first homes in this area
in 1938. Mrs. Abercrombie, Sr. is an
avid gardener and it was she who originally
carved out the garden over 50 years
ago. Many of the huge Camellias and
Azaleas you see bordering the front
of the house are still from that time.
Also note the nice mix of Red Bush and
Bottlebrush along the drive, insuring
interest and color almost all year round.

Just as the house itself has undergone many
permutations, the Abercrombie's yard has been
and continues to be a true work in progress.
LeBon and Mary Jane purchased the home in the
early 1980's and immediately began adding their
own style and personality.
As you enter through the east gate, note the
lovely fountain and the courtyard of concrete
Mexican pavers. This area was a part of an 8-month
home remodel, completed just last year. While
workers were busy on the inside, M.J's inspiration
guided Steve Cox of Plant Systems, Inc. who
tackled the yard. The pavers continue and replaced
the old aggregate pool decking. Large terra
cotta pots of flowers and Privet add sculptural
interest. Plant Systems, Inc. provides the annual
flowers that add color spots throughout the
yard.
By far, though, the crowning glory of this
yard is the 7 or 8 mature Oak trees that dot
the property. They not only provide great beauty,
but the perfect canopy for all the under plantings.
Now that the Abercrombie children are grown,
the back fence to Mill Creek has been removed.
This visually expands the already huge lot with
the majestic Oaks. Dr. Peter Morrison provided
the large birdhouse you see on one of them.
It was specially designed as a nesting spot
for Wood Ducks, who winter in our area.
A flagstone path leads to the west side of
the property. Here is the newest portion of
the yard. Many of the 50-year-old plants were
past their prime and were recently removed,
including many fruit trees. This area has been
replanted by Steve Cox and should serve as a
reminder that gardening is one hobby that is
never truly "finished"; the cycle
of life just evolves and continues.
As you leave the Abercrombie's, notice the
lovely rose garden. Here M.J. has mixed in Society
Garlic as well as Agapanthus and Iris. The effect
of the trailing Wisteria is sensational.
Thank you, Mary Jane and LeBon, for sharing
your lovely landscape. This may be close as
many of us ever come to glimpsing paradise here
on earth. I know your yard will serve as a true
inspiration to all who were lucky enough to
tour it.
